Featured Artist: The 11th Floor Band
Overlooking the Pacific on the 11th floor condo of talented songwriter/guitarist, John Barney in Long Beach, California 2003, The 11th Floor Band formed out of a jam session. It became a place conducive to creativity for John and vocalists, Reina Sanchez and Lew Kerns. As songs began to form out of some initial jams, their first album, “Best of Days” was released in 2004.
As of now, The 11th Floor Band includes; John Barney, Lew Kerns on vocals and guitar, Marshall Jeff Davis on vocals and guitar, Dave Cannan on Keys, Joe Pickard on bass and vocals, and Loud Lou Hinzo on Drums. The band performs all originals as well as some covers and has influences from wide varieties of music. All ranging from early 70’s blues/rock, Bob Dylan, Johnny Winter, The Foo Fighters, Counting Crows and Tori Amos.
The 11th Floor Band Changing The Music World
The music industry hasn't changed much, still all about the dollar and whatever music is bringing in the bucks is what gets pushed. Not many labels are willing to take chances these days on up and coming bands and it’s extremely difficult to get their attention unless you have connections. Now, there has never been a better time for independent artists with the capability of the internet’s promotional opportunities. The forthcoming of social media has leveled the playing field by gaining more exposure and gathering more followers for local artists. YouTube has given bands a chance to show their music videos to the public without having to go on MTV. Being “discovered” and getting signed by a major record label really doesn’t mean anything anymore.
“The idea that you must have a “label” is an anachronism. If you can build a local following, good things may happen.” - John
Sharing the stage with big names such as, Ambrosia, The Marshall Tucker Band, Danny Seraphine (Chicago), Kim Wilson, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and the late Johnny Winter. The 11th Floor Band just recently opened for Edgar Winter in November and told me opening for blues/rock legend, Johnny Winter became the 11th Floor Band’s all time favorite show at the San Juan Capistrano Coach House. It was truly special since it turned out to be his last year performing. John Barney tells us, “We really rocked the show in his honor!”
